Last week Marius Engebrethsen presented our paper (SINTEF Energy Research) B5-5 with title “Implementation of finite element analysis and hybrid IEC-models in online ampacity tool” at the Jicable23 conference.

The paper summarizes the effort from the last years in developing the webbased ampacity software, Grøft Design®, based on finite-element analysis (FEA) and hybrid FEA/IEC models. See for example Simplified Model for Heat Transport for Cables in Pipes or Hybrid Method for Numerical Implementation of Segmented Power Cable Conductors in Finite-element Based Ampacity Calculation, where accurate and simplified models of cables in pipes and segmented conductors are described. The paper also provides further comparison to reference cases in CIGRE technical brochure TB 880, which we believe will be a future reference for verification of models. The accuracy of Grøft Design® is very good, in case anyone wondered.

I want to express gratitude to colleagues, co-authors and Dr. George Anders for their expertise and knowledge in this work. Together with the partners this novel piece of software would not have been realized.

The work has been supported by the Research Council and project partners (Glitre Energi Nett, BKK Nett, Linja, Elvia, Istad Nett, Nexans, Norconsult, OPI, Safebase, Tensio and NTNU) in the Innovation Project DynKap (link in Norwegian).

We look forward to the continuation of this work!
