Beyond CIGRE TB 880 for Cable Rating

We are proud to announce that Grøft Design® has been verified against Technical Brochure 880 (TB 880), issued by CIGRE Working Group B1.56. TB 880 defines various cable and laying configurations used to verify that cable rating software, such as Grøft Design®, complies with the IEC 60287 standard.

Through the verification process, we not only confirmed that Grøft Design® accurately reproduces the results of TB 880, but in some cases, it even surpassed TB 880 by delivering more precise cable ratings.

This improved accuracy is attributed to Grøft Design®’s architecture, which has been built from the ground up using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) rather than relying on analytical models. Not all FEA engines are created equal. Grøft Design® utilizes Comsol Multiphysics®, a leading FEA engine trusted by both researchers and industry professionals. Validation against empirical models further underscores Grøft Design®’s superior performance in cable rating calculations.

How Can FEA Produce More Accurate Results?

Analytical models are useful, but they rely on simplifications that often omit important factors in cable rating. Many of these models were originally calculated by hand before computers became widely available.

FEA harnesses the power of supercomputers to simulate cable rating in detail by creating a virtual map of the cables and their surroundings. This approach provides greater flexibility in adjusting the accuracy and incorporating relevant physical properties into the simulation. As a result, FEA allows for a higher level of accuracy tailored to the specific needs of your project.
